Announcing Tara Amma's Scholarship for STEM Students
Tara Amma’s Scholarship is a programme designed and run by Towards Equal Foundation — a tribute to the remarkable life and legacy of H.L. Tara (1931–2025).
This annual scholarship supports meritorious STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students from underprivileged backgrounds, helping them pursue their academic aspirations with financial and mentoring support.
Cohort 1 (2025–26): 15 students are part of the inaugural cohort.
Eligibility: Students pursuing B.E., B.Tech, or B.Sc. in Bangalore with strong academic records in Science and Mathematics, and a family income below ₹10 lakhs per annum.
Support offered: Up to ₹1 lakh per annum, paid directly to the college — ensuring funds reach education and nothing else.
Mentoring: Monthly in-person mentoring sessions with a designated scholarship committee member, focused on guidance, personal development, and career planning.
Selection: Scholars are selected on transparent academic and income criteria, with no relationship to trustees or related parties.
Example scholar: Abhishek KS, son of a farmer from Ramanagara, is an MBBS student at BGS College, Bangalore. He secured his seat on merit but was unable to continue after his government scholarship was discontinued after Year 1. TEF stepped in to fund his tuition fees directly, ensuring he completes his degree.
